The external carotid artery is a terminal branch of the Common carotid artery and begins at the Carotid bifurcation.

Anatomy

The external carotid artery gives off further branches that supply the organs of the neck, the head, and the Dura mater:

Imaging

The external carotid artery can be visualized using various imaging modalities, including MRI- and CT imaging. Optimal visualization can be achieved with digital subtraction angiography.
