superior thyroid artery

The superior thyroid artery is the first branch of the Arteria carotis externa

Course

The superior thyroid artery runs in an arch downward to the anterior surface of the thyroid gland.

Supply

In addition to supplying parts of the thyroid gland, the superior thyroid artery also supplies parts of the interior of the larynx via a branch, the superior laryngeal artery, which pierces the thyrohyoid membrane. It also gives off a sternocleidomastoid branch and a cricothyroid branch[^1].
