Superficial temporal artery (STA)

Synonyms
Superficial temporal artery, STA

The superficial temporal artery (Superficial temporal artery, STA) is an extracranial vessel and represents one of the terminal branches of the external carotid artery.

Clinical relevance

Surgical transection of the superficial temporal artery does not result in any clinically significant functional deficits. In neurosurgery, the STA plays a particularly important role in the EC-IC Bypass and can be used as an extracranial arterial vessel in this context..
