The fossa interpeduncularis is a depression located between the cerebral peduncles on the rostral aspect of the brainstem, containing the interpeduncular cistern. The fossa interpeduncularis is the site of emergence of the oculomotor nerve.
Anatomical boundaries
The fossa interpeduncularis is anatomically bounded as follows1:
- Caudal: The fossa interpeduncularis is bounded caudally by the superior portion of the pons.
- Cranial: Cranially, the boundaries of the fossa interpeduncularis are formed by the mammillary bodies, which belong to the diencephalon, and the anterior portion of the substantia perforata posterior.
- Posterior: The posterior portion of the substantia perforata posterior and the anterior portion of the tegmentum form the posterior boundary.
- Anterior: The anterior boundary is formed by the bifurcation of the [basilar artery] and the proximal segment of the PCA.
- Lateral: The cerebral peduncles form the lateral boundary.
