Dorsum sellae

Last edit by Alaric Steinmetz on

The dorsum sellae is a bony structure of the skullbase and is located on the posterior side of the sella turica. The dorsum sellae is part of the sphenoid bone [^2].

Anatomy

Together with the tuberculum sellae, the dorsum sellae borders the hypophyseal fossa, in which the pituitary gland is located. Within the dorsum sellae there can be a venous channel, which is not a true dural sinus, but is connected with the cavernous sinus, inferior petrosal sinus and superior. This venous channel within the dorsum sellae could be detected in 76% of cases in a cadaver study[^1].
