The precentral gyrus lies between the central sulcus and the precentral sulcus and is part of the frontal lobe.
Function
The primary motor cortex is located in the precentral gyrus and is responsible for the central control of voluntary motor function. Like the postcentral gyrus, the precentral gyrus exhibits a somatotopic organization.
Localization
On MRI, the precentral gyrus can most easily be identified via the central sulcus, for which several radiological landmarks exist. Based on measurements of the skull, the precentral gyrus can be identified as follows:
- 2 cm posterior to the midpoint of a line from the nasion to the inion1.
- 4 to 5,4 cm posterior to the coronal suture2.
