Pons

Synonyms
Brücke

The pons is an approximately 2.5 cm-long[^1] transverse bulge of the brainstem that projects prominently basally and lies above the clivus.

Terminology

The pons and Cerebellum together form the metencephalon.

Anatomy

The pons lies between the Midbrain and the Medulla oblongata. The pons is separated from the medulla oblongata by the Pontomedullary sulcus. The Trigeminal nerve emerges laterally from the pons. The cerebellum is located dorsal to the pons and is connected to it by the two middle cerebellar peduncles (pedunculi cerebellares medii).

Basal surface

The basal surface of the pons contains the Basilar sulcus, through which the Basilar artery runs.

Dorsal surface

The dorsal surface of the pons becomes visible only after removal of the cerebellum and is bordered by the fourth ventricle.
