Q03.0

Aqueductal stenosis is a narrowing of the aqueduct, which ensures cerebrospinal fluid outflow from the third ventricle into the fourth ventricle. If this cerebrospinal fluid outflow is blocked due to aqueductal stenosis, triventricular hydrocephalus consequently develops.

Diagnosis

The gold standard for diagnosing aqueductal stenosis is MRI imaging.

Treatment

In symptomatic aqueductal stenosis, treatment options include implantation of a VP shunt or endoscopic third ventriculostomy.
