Kakarla Classification

The Kakarla Classification was published in 2008 by Kakarla et al. [^1] and is used for the classification of the positional location of external ventricular drains into three different grades.

Kakarla Grade

Position Description

EVD Position

Grade I

Optimal Position

Ipsilateral frontal horn as well as the tip of the third ventricle.

Grade II

Suboptimal position in non-eloquent brain tissue

Contralateral lateral ventricle, corpus callosum or interhemispheric fissure.

Grade III

Suboptimal position in eloquent brain tissue

brainstem, cerebellum, internal capsule, basal ganglia, thalamus, occipital cortex, basal cisterns.
