Fissura longitudinalis cerebri

Last edit by Alaric Steinmetz on

Synonyms: Längsspalte des Großhirns, Interhemisphärenspalt, medial longitudinal fissure

The fissura longitudinalis cerebri divides the telencephalon into its two hemispheres. It runs along the superior surface of the brain in the midline from anterior to posterior in the sagittal plane and extends deep into the brain as far as the corpus callosum. The superior margin of the fissure is formed by the cerebral mantle edge, which represents the transition from the convex outer surface of the brain to the inner flat surface. A duplication of the dura mater, the falx cerebri, runs within the fissura longitudinalis cerebri and provides mechanical support to the brain. The superior sagittal sinus is also located within it.
