The zygoma refers to the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, which is an important anatomical landmark for planning a craniotomy.
Anatomy
The zygoma is a long, curved bony process of the temporal bone that articulates with the zygomatic bone. The zygoma arises from the inferior part of the squamous portion of the temporal bone. It initially projects laterally before turning anteriorly. The temporalis fascia attaches to the thin superior border of the zygoma. The inferior border serves as the origin for some fibers of the masseter muscle.
Localization
The zygoma can usually be palpated and is located anterior to the external acoustic meatus and approximately at its level.
