Sequestrectomy

A sequestrectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at removing a sequester. A sequester is a detached fragment of tissue or a structure in the body that is often relevant in the context of herniated discs, particularly in the lumbar region (lumbar spine).

Clinical Relevance

In a lumbar disc herniation, parts of the nucleus pulposus may extrude and may then be located as a sequester in the spinal canal or near a nerve root, potentially causing severe pain and even neurological deficits.
