Inferior hypophyseal artery

Synonyms
inferior hypophysial artery

The inferior hypophyseal artery, together with the Superior hypophyseal artery, is responsible for supplying the Pituitary gland with arterial blood.

Anatomy

Origin

The inferior hypophyseal artery arises from the Truncus meningohypophysialis in approximately 67 % of cases and directly from the cavernous segment of the Arteria carotis interna in approximately 33 % of cases[^1].

Course

After its origin, the inferior hypophyseal artery courses medially toward the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland, where it forms an anastomosis with the contralateral inferior hypophyseal artery and supplies the pituitary gland and the Dura of the sellar floor[^2].
