Carotid cave

The carotid cave is an intradural outpouching that extends below the distal dural ring between the wall of the Internal carotid artery (ICA) and the dural band surrounding the ICA[^1].

Epidemiology

In a cadaveric study conducted in 1997, the carotid cave could be demonstrated in only 68 % of cases[^2] and is therefore not present in every patient.

Anatomy

The Superior hypophyseal artery frequently originates within the carotid cave [^1].

Clinical relevance

Aneurysms located in the carotid cave are referred to as Carotid cave aneurysms. Tumors arising from the Tuberculum sellae and the Canalis opticus can bulge into the carotid cave.
