A biopsy is the removal of tissue for more detailed examination. This is performed, for example, in cases of space-occupying lesions that are difficult to remove, in order to establish a definitive diagnosis nonetheless. For example, a brain biopsy can reliably distinguish between a lymphoma and a glioblastoma, thereby ensuring subsequent treatment if resection is not possible due to the lesion's location.
