Codman Hakim Shunt System

Last edit by Alaric Steinmetz on

The Codman Hakim shunt valve is produced by Codman Inc. and can be adjusted to 18 different pressure settings ranging from 30 to 200 mmH2O. The official manufacturer information contains general information and illustrations for reading the pressure setting using the radiographic indicator.

MRI compatibility

According to the official manufacturer information, the Codman Hakim shunt valve can be used in MRI systems up to 3 Tesla without impairing valve function. However, the manufacturer explicitly recommends checking the shunt valve setting after MRI, as it may be altered by the magnetic fields during MRI[^1]. According to the official manufacturer information, there is no degradation in the adjustability of the valve at 1.5-Tesla MRI. At 3-Tesla MRI, reduced adjustability of the shunt valve may occur after 10 MRI examinations.

Reading the pressure setting

The currently adjusted pressure setting of Codman Hakim shunt valves can be reliably read using a radiograph of the shunt valve.

Adjusting the pressure setting

Codman Hakim shunt valves are adjusted using a special device provided by Codman. According to the manufacturer information, it is recommended that the opening pressure not be changed by more than 40 mmH20 within 24 hours.
