Teflon™ is a plastic polymer used in various surgical disciplines.

Properties

Teflon™ is the trade name for polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a plastic polymer with a very low coefficient of friction. It has excellent dielectric properties and is considered relatively inert[^4].

Uses

In neurosurgery, Teflon is used, for example, in operations for vascular decompression, such as for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia or hemifacial spasm. In this context, Teflon appears to be relatively well tolerated by neural tissue[^1].

Complications

Contact with the tentorium and/or the dura may trigger an inflammatory reaction caused by Teflon, which can lead to granuloma formation[^2] [^3].
