Synonyms: Vertebral artery groove

The sulcus arteriae vertebralis is located on the posterior arch of the Atlas and is a curved groove in which the vertebral artery lies after exiting the foramen transversarium before it runs intracranially through the foramen magnum.

Variants

Instead of a sulcus arteriae vertebralis, a canalis arteriae vertebralis may also be present as a variation[^1].
