Sacral fracture

Sacral fractures are defined as fractures of the Sacrum.

Epidemiology

Fractures of the sacrum are rare and are usually caused by shear injuries; they occur in approximately 17 % of patients with pelvic fractures[^1] and are accompanied by neurological deficits in 22-60 % of cases[^1].

Classification

The sacrum below S2 is not essential for walking or supporting the Spine; however, it may still prove unstable because of forces exerted when lying or sitting[^2]. The Classification of sacral fractures can be based on the morphological pattern of the fracture.

Treatment

Treatment of sacral fractures is usually conservative. In a case series of 35 patients, only one patient with complete Cauda equina syndrome underwent surgery, with no postoperative improvement in symptoms[^3].
