The posterior spinal artery is a paired artery that arises from the Vertebral artery and supplies the dorsal horns and dorsal columns of the Spinal cord with blood.
Anatomy
The posterior spinal arteries run caudally along the Medulla oblongata and spinal cord, anterior to the posterior spinal nerve roots. Via fine pial collateral vessels running transversely and longitudinally, the posterior spinal arteries form numerous anastomoses with the Anterior spinal artery. In this way, a vascular ring is formed around each spinal cord segment, which is referred to as the vasocorona medullaris.
Clinical relevance
Occlusion of the posterior spinal artery can lead to Posterior spinal artery syndrome[^1].
