Foramen of Monro

Synonyms
Foramina of monro, Foramen Monro, Foramen interventriculare

The foramen of Monro is paired and connects both Lateral ventricles with the third ventricle.

Anatomy

The anteromedial anatomical boundary is formed by the Fornix and the posterolateral boundary by the Thalamus.

Clinical relevance

Obstruction of the foramen of Monro leads to Obstructive hydrocephalus and may, for example, be caused by a Colloid cyst, which typically occurs in the region of the foramen of Monro. During endoscopic procedures, the third ventricle can, for example, be reached through the foramen of Monro via the lateral ventricle.
