CSF diapedesis

The term CSF diapedesis describes the passage of Cerebrospinal fluid into the surrounding brain tissue

Interpretation

CSF diapedesis is indicative of increased intracranial cerebrospinal fluid pressure. This involves an increased accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain tissue, which can be observed particularly adjacent to the Ventricular system.

Imaging

CSF diapedesis can be visualized on CT and MRI imaging.

CT with transependymal CSF flow
Axial CT of the head showing hydrocephalus with associated transependymal CSF flow around the ventricular system.
CSF transudation on MRI
Axial T2-weighted MRI of the skull of a child with hydrocephalus and associated transependymal CSF flow.
