Barricaid is a bone-anchored implant for closing large defects of the annulus fibrosus after lumbar diskectomy. The system is intended to prevent residual disc material from reherniating through the surgically created annular defect into the Spinal canal[^1]. It is not a disc replacement.
Mechanism of action
The implant essentially consists of two components:
a flexible polymer component to cover the inner surface of the annular defect
a titanium anchor for fixation in the adjacent Vertebral body
After removal of the sequestered disc fragment, the anchor is inserted into the vertebral body. The polymer membrane lies intradiscally at the defect and acts as a mechanical barrier. The aim is to reduce symptomatic recurrent disc herniations and repeat surgery without having to perform an extensive nucleotomy.
