The Glasgow Outcome Scale was published in 1975[^1] and is used for the clinical classification of patients following an organic brain injury, such as after a Traumatic brain injury.
Classification
Grade | Functional status | Description |
GOS 1 | Death | Death of the patient. |
GOS 2 | Persistent vegetative state | Most severe impairment with a persistent state of unresponsiveness and absence of higher mental functions. |
GOS 3 | Severe disability | Severe impairment with permanent dependence on assistance for activities of daily living. |
GOS 4 | Moderate disability | No dependence on assistance in everyday life; employment is possible in sheltered settings. |
GOS 5 | Mild disability | Mild impairment with minor neurological and psychological deficits. |
