The Glasgow Outcome Scale was published in 1975[^1] and serves the clinical classification of patients following an organic brain injury, such as after a traumatic brain injury.

Description

GOS 1

Death

Death of the patient.

GOS 2

Persistent vegetative state

Severe damage with persistent state of unresponsiveness and lack of higher mental functions.

GOS 3

Severe disability

Severe damage with permanent need for assistance in activities of daily living.

GOS 4

Moderate disability

No dependency on aids in daily life, work possible in special facilities.

GOS 5

Low disability

Mild damage with minor neurological and psychological deficits.
