Susceptibility artifact

Susceptibility artifacts are imaging artifacts seen in MRI.

Background

Susceptibility artifacts arise from local magnetic field inhomogeneities caused by the strong magnetic properties of materials in MRI imaging. Susceptibility artifacts caused by metallic materials (e.g., surgical instruments, braces) can deform image signals locally to such an extent that the diagnostic value of MRI is significantly limited. The extent of the artifacts depends on the field strength and sequence protocol. Special MRI sequences, such as WARP sequences, can minimize susceptibility artifacts in the images[^1].
