Clinical relevance

The vein is of particular clinical relevance because it runs near the rostral portion of the Trigeminal nerve in the region of the cerebellopontine angle. If possible, intraoperative coagulation of the superior petrosal vein should be avoided, as occlusion of the vein is associated with complications in up to 30 % of cases[^1].
