Sulcus

A sulcus is the groove between two Cerebral gyri (gyri).

Anatomy

The sulci on the brain surfaces are natural extensions of the subarachnoid space and have a depth of 1 to 3 cm[^2]. Smaller vessels frequently run within the sulci.

Clinical relevance

  • When planning stereotactic punctures, the entry point should not pass through a sulcus because of the vessels running within it and the consequently increased risk of hemorrhage

  • In open surgical approaches, depending on the target location, an approach through a sulcus may be optimal in order to have a shorter route through the parenchyma[^1].
