The substantia grisea periaqueductalis is gray matter surrounding the Aque­ductus me­sencephali, which contains nuclei and has connections with the limbic system. Fear and flight reflexes are mediated in the periaqueductal gray matter. It also plays an important role in endogenous pain inhibition and is an important site of action for opioids.
