Stupor is a severe disorder of the level of consciousness in which the patient can be aroused only by painful stimuli or demonstrate reactivity without reaching a fully awake state (e.g., defensive movements with the eyes remaining closed). If the disturbance of consciousness worsens, stupor progresses to coma.
