Occipitomastoid suture

Last edit by Alaric Steinmetz on

The occipitomastoid suture is a cranial suture between the occipital bone and the mastoid part of the temporal bone[^1].

Anatomy

The occipitomastoid suture ends at the Asterion and continues into the lambdoid suture.

Clinical Relevance

Like any suture, the occipitomastoid suture is considered an anatomical weak point and it can become separated under traumatic impact (sutures burst). Intraoperatively, the suture is usually well visible and can be better visualized using hydrogen peroxide if necessary.
