The nucleus nervi hypoglossi is a purely somatomotor cranial nerve nucleus and the only nucleus of the Hypoglossal nerve.
Function
The neurons of the nucleus nervi hypoglossi provide motor innervation to the muscles of the tongue via the hypoglossal nerve[^2].
Anatomy
The nucleus nervi hypoglossi is located in the Medulla oblongata immediately paramedian as an elongated column of cells. Its efferent fibers run anteriorly through the medulla and emerge between the olive and the pyramid. Thus, the hypoglossal nerve is the only cranial nerve to emerge ventral to the olive, which makes it easy to identify[^1].
