Synonyms: tectorial membrane

The Membrana tectoria is the continuation of the Ligamentum longitudinale posterior.

Anatomy

The Membrana tectoria can be divided into two components[^1]:

  • Superficial component: This component represents the continuation of the Ligamentum longitudinale posterior. It is a strong ligament that connects the dorsal surface of the Dens with the ventral surface of the Foramen magnum, as well as the dorsal surface of the second and third cervical vertebra[^1].

  • Deep (accessory) component: This is laterally located and connects the second cervical vertebra with the Condylus occipitalis[^1].

Function

The main function of the Membrana tectoria is to stabilize the craniovertebral junction during flexion and extension movements. In addition to the Ligamenta alaria, the Membrana tectoria is the most important ligament for maintaining atlantooccipital stability.[^1]
