The meatus acusticus externus is the external auditory canal and is an important anatomical landmark for orientation and planning surgical approaches in neurosurgery.
Anatomy
The meatus acusticus externus, together with the auricle, forms the external ear. The meatus acusticus externus extends approximately 2-3 cm from the porus acusticus externus to the tympanic membrane and has a slightly convex curvature posteriorly and cranially that serves a protective function.
