The lambdoid suture (sutura lambdoidea) is a fibrous, connective tissue junction between the Os occipitale and the two Ossa parietalia of the skull.
Nomenclature
The name derives from the shape of the letter lambda, which resembles the lambdoid suture when viewed from the dorsal aspect.
Clinical relevance
Like any suture, the lambdoid suture is an anatomical weak point of the skull, and traumatic forces can cause separation of the suture. Intraoperatively, hydrogen peroxide can be used to visualize sutures more clearly.
