Various types of coils are available for the endovascular treatment of aneurysms using coiling. In contrast to conventional uncoated coils, there are coil loops coated with a thin hydrogel layer. Current study data favor the use of second-generation hydrogel coils over conventional uncoated coils. The advantage of hydrogel coils lies in the accumulation of fluid within the coil, which can thereby increase in volume and is intended to ensure better occlusion of the aneurysm.
