The Hoffmann-Tinel sign refers to paresthesias that occur in the distribution of an injured nerve when it is percussed. The Hoffmann-Tinel sign serves as a simple clinical test during the evaluation of carpal tunnel syndrome, in which the median nerve is compressed, or peroneal palsy. It can also be used to monitor nerve regeneration.
