The hippocampus is located along the medial border of the temporal lobe and is a central relay station of the limbic system.
Anatomy
The hippocampus is located in the temporal lobe and laterally borders the inferior horn of the Lateral ventricle. Rostrally, the Amygdaloid body is located. The caudal end of the Corpus callosum forms the posterior superior boundary. With the Fornix, it courses in an arc beneath the corpus callosum to the Mammillary bodies[^1].
Function
The hippocampus is essential for transferring information from short-term to long-term memory. Bilateral hippocampal damage leads to pronounced anterograde amnesia[^2].
