Foramen lacerum

The foramen lacerum is an irregularly shaped bony opening of the base of the skull in the area of the middle cranial fossa.

Anatomy

The internal carotid artery lies above the foramen lacerum and gives this segment of the internal carotid artery its name. The foramen lacerum itself is closed by fibrous and cartilaginous tissue and no relevant structures pass through it[^1]. The foramen lacerum has the following bony dimensions[^1] :
