The term Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS), or Persistent Spinal Pain Syndrome according to the newer terminology[^4], has been known since spinal surgery was first performed. According to the definition by Follet and Dirks[^1], it refers to the exhaustion of surgical options for lower back pain, radicular pain, or a combination of both after one or more surgeries without improvement.
Terminology
A newer definition is intended to replace the term FBSS with Persistent Spinal Pain Syndrome (PSPS), which also includes the group of Chronic Pain after Spinal Surgery (CPSS)[^3] [^4].
Treatment
One treatment option is Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS), particularly when a radicular and neuropathic pain component is present[^2].
