A dural tack-up suture is an artificial fixation, usually using an interrupted suture, of the dura mater to the bone, for example. This results in elevation of the dura and serves to prevent postoperative epidural bleeding into the epidural space. A distinction is made between dural tack-up sutures placed at the edge of the craniotomy and central dural tack-up sutures, which are attached centrally to the bone flap. For marginal dural tack-up sutures, it is important to place them on the dura mater as close as possible to the craniotomy edge in order to provide the best possible protection against epidural bleeding. The handling of dural tack-up sutures varies depending on the surgeon and the neurosurgical department.
