Corneal reflex

Last edit by Alaric Steinmetz on

The corneal reflex is a superficial reflex and is classified as one of the brainstem reflexes.

Afferent limb

The afferent limb of the reflex arc travels via the ophthalmic nerve, a branch of the trigeminal nerve, in response to tactile stimuli.

Efferent limb

The efferent limb of the corneal reflex travels via the facial nerve, which triggers contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle.

Clinical significance

Loss of the corneal reflex usually correlates with damage to the brainstem.
