Fever occurs in approximately 70 % of patients in a neurointensive care unit. In approximately half of cases, the cause of the fever is infectious, while in the other half it is central fever[^1].
Etiology
Central fever may be triggered, for example, by a Subarachnoid hemorrhage, a Traumatic brain injury, an Intracerebral hemorrhage, or a Tumor.
Course
A study conducted in 2013[^1] showed that central fever occurs within the first 72 hours after admission to a neurological intensive care unit in approximately 75 % of cases and persists in approximately 25 % of cases.
Outcome
The occurrence of central fever has a statistically significant negative effect on the outcome of neurological intensive care patients[^2] [^3] [^4].
