Carotid endarterectomy

Carotid endarterectomy is a procedure used to eliminate atherosclerotic stenosis in the region of the common carotid artery (CCA). The artery is opened, the plaque is mechanically removed, and the artery is subsequently closed watertight. Depending on the institution, the procedure is performed by neurosurgeons or vascular surgeons.
