Brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAER)

Brainstem auditory evoked responses are used to assess objective hearing ability. BAER makes it possible to measure acoustically evoked brainstem potentials.
Procedure
To generate brainstem auditory evoked responses, click sounds are delivered to the patient's ear via headphones. These potentials were previously used as an aid in the diagnosis of vestibular schwannomas. Its use in intraoperative neuromonitoring is limited and is largely being replaced by direct stimulation of the vestibulocochlear nerve[^1].
