Chemically, most bone cements are thermoplastic polymers based on polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA, acrylic glass). Before use, they are mixed from two separate components, a binder and a hardener. The bone cement thus prepared can be worked for a short time before it hardens through polymerization. In neurosurgery, bone cement is used primarily for calvarial reconstruction as well as kypho- and vertebroplasty.
