Bell phenomenon

Synonyms
Bells phenomenon

The Bell phenomenon is defined as upward rotation of the eyeball during eyelid closure.

Background

The Bell phenomenon is a physiological protective reflex. Through upward rotation, the eye attempts to protect the sensitive cornea. The Bell phenomenon is normally not visible because eyelid closure is completed before it occurs. However, in incomplete eyelid closure, e.g., in the context of Facial palsy, it becomes clinically apparent.
