Astrocytomas are among the most common tumors of the brain and occur predominantly in middle age. Astrocytomas originate from astrocytes and are therefore classified as gliomas.
Localization
Astrocytomas can occur both cranially and spinally.
Imaging
The gold standard for imaging astrocytomas is MRI. Spinal astrocytomas often have imaging features very similar to those of spinal Ependymomas. A possible, but not definitive, distinguishing feature is the presence of Syringohydromyelia in ependymomas, which occurs only very rarely in astrocytomas[^1].
