A tic is a brief, involuntary, regularly or irregularly recurrent, and sometimes complex motor contraction of individual muscles or muscle groups. Tics occur in the context of various neurological and neuropsychiatric disorders, but are best known as the cardinal symptom of Tourette syndrome.
Pathophysiology
Tics are classified among the extrapyramidal hyperkinesias.
