Tetraparesis

Tetraparesis is paralysis of all four extremities. In contrast to Tetraplegia, however, the paralysis is not complete.

Classification

Depending on the location of the lesion, a clinical distinction is made between spastic and flaccid tetraparesis:

  • Spastic tetraparesis: Occurs with damage to the upper motor neuron. It is characterized by increased deep tendon reflexes and increased muscle tone.

  • Flaccid tetraparesis: Occurs with damage to the lower motor neuron or peripheral nerves. It is characterized by diminished or absent reflexes and muscle atrophy.
