Synechia refers to a pathological adhesion or fusion of tissue layers or parts of organs that are physiologically separate. The term is most commonly used for adhesions involving mucous membranes or serous membranes.
Etiology
The formation of synechiae is usually based on a similar pathophysiological mechanism:
Inflammation: Exudation of fibrin onto the tissue surfaces.
Trauma: Mechanical irritation or iatrogenic injury to the layers.
If the fibrin is not broken down promptly, fibroblasts migrate into the area and form connective tissue bridges, which ultimately lead to firm adhesions.
